Google Donates $1 Million to Support Penn GSE’s AI in School Systems Program

The University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education will expand its AI in School Systems program to five new districts after receiving a $1 million donation from Google.

The University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education (Penn GSE) announced that it will expand its AI in School Systems (PASS) program following a $1 million donation from Google.

Launched earlier this year, the PASS initiative helps K-12 school systems navigate artificial intelligence integration through a district-based professional development model. The program focuses on ethical and effective AI use across school levels, including topics such as data privacy, model bias, and equitable implementation.

With the new funding, the program will extend to five additional school districts or regions across Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware beginning in December 2025. Participation will remain free for districts.

The PASS program provides training for district administrators, school leaders, and educators. Administrators learn to develop AI-related policies, school leaders focus on capacity building, and educators explore classroom applications of AI.

Representatives from both Penn GSE and Google stated that the initiative aims to build system-wide expertise in AI and could serve as a model for public education nationwide.
