GM Uses AI to Target Two Year Vehicle Development
General Motors targets a vehicle development cycle of about two years from concept to production, compared with the traditional four to five years, according to CNBC. The company is expanding its use of AI, simulation and concurrent engineering to reduce physical testing, but did not provide a timeline for reaching the target.
GM said it virtually tested more than 300,000 battery designs before building a physical prototype of its lithium manganese rich battery. The chemistry will be used exclusively in its fourth generation electric vehicles, which GM expects to make 25% more aerodynamic and 15% lighter.
The company also plans to release a proprietary OnStar AI assistant through an over the air update for the 2027 Cadillac Lyriq before expanding it to other models. The assistant will be sold as a subscription; GM currently uses Google's Gemini for its in-vehicle assistant. GM reiterated plans to introduce eyes off highway driving in 2028, starting with the Cadillac Escalade IQ.
