G2 finds AI agent oversight erodes productivity gains
G2 found that 66% of surveyed companies now use AI agents in limited or full production, according to findings it shared in a press release. The share of B2B software buyers who purchased AI agent software or services in the past year rose to 86% from 69%.
Oversight remains a substantial cost. About 31% of respondents said employees spend at least six hours each week checking agent work, while 45% said oversight and rework consume more than a quarter of expected productivity gains. Another 46% reported higher operating costs than expected.
Among organizations with agents in production, 38% operate more than 100 agents. However, 47% manage ownership and controls informally or through individual departments, while 23% use central governance. Only 27% maintain a central agent registry and 14% have tools that monitor unusual behavior, costs or risks as they occur.
The findings come from a July 2026 survey of 1,019 B2B decision makers across North America, Europe, the Middle East, Africa and the Asia Pacific region. The report also cites more than 2,500 reviews in G2's AI Agent Builder category from March to August 2026. G2 runs a B2B software review marketplace that lists AI agent products.
