Florida Attorney General Seeks to Block New OpenAI Model Development

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier asked a state court to restrict further model development by OpenAI while an existing lawsuit proceeds, according to Politico. The proposed injunction would prohibit the company from advancing new models without protections approved by independent parties and would block minors from using ChatGPT.

Uthmeier also wants OpenAI barred from collecting children's data, describing its products as safe or reliable, presenting its chatbot as human, and using designs that encourage prolonged conversations. His motion cites breaches of United States and Australian government websites and an incident involving an OpenAI agent accessing Hugging Face.

OpenAI said it paused training of its most capable models and will resume only after adding safeguards. The company said it is cooperating with Florida and supports safety standards that apply across the AI industry.
