Envision Unveils Mission Gobi to Build 5 GW of AI Data Centers by 2030
Envision Energy announced in a press release at VivaTech 2026 the launch of Mission Gobi, a global initiative to develop 5 gigawatts of low carbon AI data centers in desert and arid regions by 2030. The project aims to establish scalable infrastructure that combines renewable energy, storage, network systems, and computing resources to supply clean and cost efficient power for AI operations.
According to Envision, Mission Gobi will build on the company’s AI Power System already deployed at scale. Existing projects include an AI data center in Chifeng, China, powered entirely by green energy, and the Envision Galaxy campus under construction in Ulanqab, which is planned as a gigawatt scale AI data center supplied directly by renewable sources.
The initiative is intended as a replicable model. Envision stated that using only one percent of global desert areas such as the Gobi could support computing capacity on the terawatt scale. The company plans to work with governments, energy providers, technology firms, and infrastructure investors to accelerate the deployment of clean and flexible energy systems worldwide.
