Ecosia Drops Mistral for Chinese Open Weight AI Models
Ecosia is ending its partnership with Mistral AI and moving toward open weight models, according to Heise. The Berlin based search engine will use models hosted through the Melious platform.
Ecosia CEO Christian Kroll cited persistent technical problems, limited performance and regular outages caused by overloaded Mistral servers. He also said Mistral had fallen a year behind competing providers.
Melious hosts models including Qwen, GLM and Kimi from Chinese developers. Kroll said the switch has cut Ecosia's operating costs in half while improving quality and performance.
