Coinbase Introduces x402 Protocol for Autonomous AI Payments

Coinbase has launched the x402 protocol, enabling instant stablecoin payments over HTTP, allowing AI agents to transact autonomously.

Coinbase has launched the x402 protocol, enabling instant stablecoin payments directly over HTTP, allowing AI agents to transact autonomously. Announced on their website, the protocol aims to modernize online payments by embedding stablecoin transactions into web interactions.

The x402 protocol resurrects the HTTP 402 "Payment Required" status code, facilitating seamless payments for APIs, apps, and AI agents. This integration allows AI agents to independently access and pay for resources in real-time, eliminating the need for pre-paid credits or human-managed accounts.

Coinbase has partnered with AWS, Circle, Anthropic, and Near Protocol to launch this initiative. The protocol is designed to simplify real-time monetization and unlock new use cases, such as micropayments for AI agents and apps. By embedding payments directly into HTTP, x402 transforms AI agents into autonomous economic actors capable of independently discovering, purchasing, and utilizing resources.
