Appian and Synechron Introduce Open Underwriting Stack for Insurance Underwriting

In a press release, Appian and Synechron announced Open Underwriting Stack, a joint reference architecture for insurance carriers. It combines Synechron's InsureMESH with the Appian Platform to support underwriting with AI process automation and an open data foundation.

The architecture is designed to process transactions across legacy core systems, SaaS applications, and external data sources without replacing existing systems. It includes three layers: Synechron's InsureMESH platform, Appian process automation and AI agents, and Appian Connected Underwriting as a configurable application layer.

InsureMESH stores insurance transaction events in an open format inside a secured framework. The companies said the platform can connect to external services for functions such as rating, billing, and document printing, while Appian handles triage, enrichment, recommendations, and workflow routing.

The Open Underwriting Stack was demonstrated at InsurTech Insights New York. The companies said carriers can use it alongside systems such as Guidewire, Duck Creek, or modular SaaS tools.
