Amazon Cuts Jobs in AGI Unit and Closes San Francisco AI Site
Amazon is laying off some employees in its artificial general intelligence unit, CNBC reports. The company did not say how many workers were affected or which parts of the group were cut.
The AGI unit works on AI models and also includes teams focused on silicon development and quantum computing. Employees working on model customization and post training said on LinkedIn that they were among those laid off.
Amazon is also closing its San Francisco AGI site as part of the same round of cuts. The company said its frontier model research lab will continue under Pieter Abbeel, a UC Berkeley professor who joined Amazon in 2024 after the company licensed technology and hired staff from robotics startup Covariant.
The San Francisco AGI Lab was founded in December 2024 and was initially built around employees from Adept, including cofounder and CEO David Luan. Nova Act, a browser agent model and service from the group, remains available on AWS.
