Allegheny County Requires AI Disclosures in Political Ads

Oct 21, 2026
Allegheny County candidates must label certain political ads containing synthetic images, video or audio beginning in January. Violations may bring a fine of up to $300 or up to 30 days in jail.

Allegheny County Council unanimously approved a law requiring candidates for county elected office to disclose certain uses of AI in political advertising, according to TribLive. The requirements take effect in January.

The law covers ads with images, video or audio generated or substantially altered by AI when the content could mislead viewers about its authenticity. It excludes text generated by AI when presented alone and material that is clearly fictional based on its context or depiction.

Disclosures must appear when the ad is first presented, use the same medium as the ad, and be permanent or extremely difficult to remove. Violations may result in a fine of up to $300 or imprisonment for up to 30 days.
