September 11, 2025
Airtel has started building its 44MW sustainable data centre at Tatu City, Kenya, marking a significant step in establishing East Africa's data centre hub.

Bharti Airtel has commenced construction on its 44MW sustainable data centre at Tatu City, Kenya, announced in a press release. The facility, part of the Nxtra by Airtel initiative, is set to become a key component of East Africa's digital infrastructure.

Located within the Tatu City Special Economic Zone, the data centre will be powered by 95% renewable energy, making it one of the greenest data centre locations globally. The facility will offer 44MW of IT power capacity in phases, featuring high-density GPU-ready racks and advanced security systems.

Tatu City has invested heavily in infrastructure to support such developments, including a 135MVA power substation and a comprehensive distribution network. The city provides a conducive environment for businesses, with incentives like reduced corporate tax rates and VAT zero-rating on goods and services.

Yashnath Issur, CEO of Data Centre at Airtel Africa, emphasized the project's focus on sustainability and resilience, aiming to empower businesses and support governments across the region.
