Xanadu and Oak Ridge National Laboratory have integrated the PennyLane quantum software library with the Frontier supercomputer, allowing researchers to simulate large quantum programs using the Lightning simulator and MPI for distributed computation.

Xanadu and Oak Ridge National Laboratory have integrated the PennyLane quantum software library with the Frontier supercomputer, announced in a press release. The collaboration enables researchers at the Oak Ridge Leadership Facility to write and execute quantum programs using PennyLane’s Lightning simulator on Frontier’s exascale computing infrastructure powered by AMD processors.

The integration allows scientists to simulate large quantum systems and test advanced algorithms that require significant computational resources. By combining Frontier’s performance with PennyLane’s interface, researchers can explore complex quantum problems and analyze performance limitations that smaller systems cannot reveal.

Xanadu has also added Message Passing Interface (MPI) functionality to Lightning, making it possible to distribute computations across multiple nodes. This improves runtime efficiency and supports new methods for large-scale quantum simulation. The feature allows users to take advantage of Frontier’s parallel computing resources for quantum research.

To support this initiative, Xanadu conducted a hands-on workshop for the Oak Ridge research community. The session introduced participants to quantum programming with PennyLane and demonstrated how to leverage Frontier’s computing power for quantum applications.
