xAI Completes Rapid Installation of 550,000 Nvidia GPUs
xAI has completed the installation of 550,000 Nvidia B200 GPUs in a matter of weeks, a pace far exceeding previous expectations. This installation provides over seven times the compute power used for training Grok 4, which was released just weeks ago, and 30 times the compute power of Grok 3, released in February 2025.
The speed of this installation is unprecedented, with xAI achieving a rate of 200,000 to 300,000 chips installed in just 30 days. This efficiency is approximately 100 times faster than other companies in the industry. The power requirements for this setup are substantial, with the 550,000 B200 chips needing about 1 gigawatt of power, compared to the 400-500 megawatts required for the 230,000 chips used in Grok 4.
Elon Musk, in a recent post, highlighted xAI's ambitious goal of bringing 50 million units of H100 equivalent-AI compute online within five years, emphasizing improved power efficiency.
