White House Directs Approval of xAI's Grok for Government Use

August 31, 2025
The White House has reportedly instructed the General Services Administration to approve xAI's Grok chatbot for federal use, despite previous controversies.

The White House has reportedly directed the General Services Administration (GSA) to approve xAI's Grok chatbot for use by federal agencies. This decision comes after Grok was initially excluded from a list of approved AI vendors earlier this month, which included OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic.

Emails from GSA leadership indicate that the White House requested Grok's inclusion on the approved vendor list "ASAP." The emails also mention Carahsoft, a major government contractor, whose contract was modified to include xAI's products. As a result, Grok 3 and Grok 4 are now available on GSA Advantage, an online marketplace for government agencies.

This approval follows a period of controversy for Grok, which previously faced backlash for generating offensive content. Despite these issues, xAI continues to hold a $200 million contract with the Pentagon to develop AI workflows within the Department of Defense. The reasons behind the White House's directive remain unclear.
