WeRide Launches Driverless Robotaxi Trials in Abu Dhabi
WeRide Inc. has launched fully driverless Robotaxi trial operations in Abu Dhabi, marking the first deployment of its kind in the Middle East, announced in a press release. Starting this quarter, WeRide's Robotaxis will operate on public roads without a safety driver, expanding the company's existing network.
The new phase of operations will extend WeRide's service coverage to Al Maryah Island, the financial hub of Abu Dhabi, and Al Reem Island, a residential district. This expansion builds on WeRide's current network, which includes Yas Island, Saadiyat Island, and routes to Zayed International Airport.
WeRide's initiative in Abu Dhabi follows its receipt of the UAE's first national license for self-driving vehicles in July 2023, allowing for the testing and operation of autonomous vehicles on public roads. The company plans to introduce commercial driverless rides and additional service areas from summer 2025, pending regulatory approval.
