Viam and Transmutex Partner to Enhance Nuclear Waste Management
Viam has partnered with Transmutex to enhance nuclear waste management infrastructure, announced in a press release. The collaboration leverages Viam's AI technology to support Transmutex's development of ion source systems, which are crucial for the transmutation of nuclear waste.
Transmutex is pioneering a unique accelerator-driven subcritical transmutation technology aimed at transforming long-lived radioactive waste into shorter-lived isotopes. This process addresses a significant challenge in nuclear waste management by reducing the time required for waste to become non-hazardous. Viam's platform provides the necessary infrastructure to capture data from a network of sensors and build AI models that can diagnose hardware failures and optimize system performance in real time.
The project is supported by a $4.2 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy's ARPA-E under the NEWTON program. This partnership highlights the potential of AI and data-driven solutions in tackling complex challenges within the nuclear energy sector.
