Trump Alters U.S. Cybersecurity Policies, Reversing Biden's Initiatives
Donald Trump has signed an executive order that significantly revises U.S. cybersecurity policies, reversing several initiatives from the Biden administration. According to TechCrunch, the order eliminates digital identity mandates and AI security measures, which were part of Biden's efforts to enhance cybersecurity.
The new directive removes requirements for software developers to submit attestations validating secure software development practices, a move initially mandated by Biden's 2021 executive order. Instead, the Trump administration will rely on voluntary guidance developed by the National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence.
Additionally, the order limits cyber sanctions to foreign malicious actors, a shift from the previous policy that allowed sanctions against any person involved in foreign-directed hacking operations. This change aims to prevent misuse against domestic political opponents.
The executive order also places a new emphasis on addressing artificial intelligence software flaws within interagency coordination for vulnerability management. However, it eliminates Biden's initiatives to test AI's role in defending critical infrastructure and prioritizing AI security research.
