TIER IV Tests Level 2+ Autonomous Truck with Yamato and Mitsubishi Fuso
Japan-based TIER IV has completed proof-of-concept tests for a Level 2+ semi-trailer truck intended for long-haul autonomous logistics, announced in a press release. The trials were conducted in collaboration with Yamato Transport and Mitsubishi Fuso Truck and Bus Corporation as part of a Japanese government initiative.
The tests took place from February 16 to 20, 2026, on a 500-kilometer route between Tokyo's Haneda Chronogate Base and Osaka's Kansai Gateway Base. The truck operated autonomously for 100 kilometers on the Shin-Tomei Expressway in Shizuoka Prefecture, maintaining schedules comparable to manual driving.
Evaluation focused on vehicle performance, safety, and operational workflows. Data was collected on trailer motion, lane-keeping accuracy, and driver intervention patterns. The trial also tested partial automation of pre-trip inspections, such as tire pressure checks, and included remote vehicle monitoring to prepare for future Level 4 operations.
TIER IV stated that insights from the tests will support the integration of Level 4 autonomous trucks into Yamato Group’s logistics network.
