Spotify and Universal Music Group announced in a press release new recorded music and publishing licensing agreements that enable fans to create covers and remixes of songs from participating artists using generative AI technology.

The agreements will support a new Spotify tool that lets users generate licensed covers and remixes, with artists and songwriters sharing in the revenue created. The tool will be offered as a paid add-on for Spotify Premium subscribers.

Spotify Co-CEO Alex Norström said the initiative is based on consent, credit, and compensation for artists and songwriters. Universal Music Group Chairman and CEO Sir Lucian Grainge described the collaboration as artist-focused and designed to promote responsible use of AI in music creation.
