Southwest Airlines has chosen Amazon Web Services as its preferred cloud provider to modernize its technology and expand its use of artificial intelligence. The partnership was announced in a press release stating that Southwest plans to move from on-premises systems to a cloud based, AI and agent enabled architecture on AWS by 2028.

The airline will use AWS tools such as Amazon Quick and the agentic coding service Kiro. Kiro is being deployed to refactor legacy code for Southwest.com, a key customer facing platform. More than 2,700 developers are using Kiro to automate testing, generate cloud infrastructure, and accelerate the modernization of existing systems.

AWS’s AI Driven Development Lifecycle is also being adopted across Southwest to change how software is built. This approach combines AI agents with engineering oversight to streamline development and speed up delivery across the company’s operations, customer experience, and internal systems.
