September 25, 2025
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has detailed a vision for AI to become as universal as electricity, aiming to produce a gigawatt of AI infrastructure weekly, according to his blog post.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has detailed a sweeping vision for artificial intelligence in a recent blog post titled "Abundant Intelligence." Altman envisions AI becoming as universal as electricity, with plans to create a factory capable of producing a gigawatt of new AI infrastructure every week. This ambitious goal will require significant innovation across various technological domains, including chips, power, and robotics, and is expected to take years to achieve. Altman shared that the execution of this vision will be challenging but believes it is possible.

OpenAI's business is expanding rapidly, with the company doubling its annual revenue to $12 billion in 2025. Looking ahead, OpenAI forecasts that spending will jump to $115 billion through 2029, reflecting the capital-intensive path it has chosen. Altman's blog post follows a series of landmark agreements, including a $100 billion investment from Nvidia and a $300 billion cloud partnership with Oracle, aimed at expanding OpenAI's capacity and securing compute and cloud resources on an unprecedented scale.

Altman emphasized the importance of building systems capable of delivering intelligence reliably and at scale. He suggested that with sufficient compute power, AI could potentially solve significant global challenges, such as curing cancer or providing customized tutoring to every student on earth. The focus is on expanding AI infrastructure to avoid having to prioritize one solution over another due to compute limitations.
