Pope Leo XIV Criticizes AI Generated Art

Oct 5, 2026
Pope Leo XIV says machine generated images are fundamentally different from human art because algorithms lack human creativity.

Pope Leo XIV criticized machine generated art in a post on X, according to TechCrunch. He said it is increasingly urgent to distinguish human art from material produced by machines.

The pope said the difference is ontological as well as aesthetic. He argued that algorithms rely on statistical calculations based on images created by people and lack the human qualities involved in making art.

The comments continue the position outlined in his May encyclical on AI and human dignity, which called for regulation and ethical oversight of the technology.
