OpenAI has launched the ChatGPT agent, a new feature that enables ChatGPT to independently complete tasks using its own virtual computer, announced on their website. This agent integrates capabilities from previous tools like Operator and Deep Research, allowing it to navigate websites, run code, analyze data, and complete tasks such as planning meetings and updating spreadsheets.

The ChatGPT agent is available to Pro, Plus, and Team users, with Enterprise and Education access expected in the coming weeks. Users can activate the agent mode via the tools dropdown in ChatGPT's composer window. The agent uses a suite of tools, including a visual browser, a text-based browser, terminal access, and API integration. It can also work with connectors like Gmail and GitHub, provided users log in via a secure takeover mode.

This new system allows for a fluid transition between reasoning and action within a single conversation, enhancing ChatGPT's utility in both professional and personal contexts. Users can interrupt or redirect tasks at any time without losing progress, ensuring tasks remain aligned with their goals. The feature is currently limited to 400 messages per month for Pro users and 40 for Plus and Team users, with additional usage available through credit-based options.

OpenAI has emphasized the importance of safeguarding against risks such as adversarial manipulation through prompt injection. The ChatGPT agent requires explicit confirmation before high-impact actions and offers settings to delete browsing data and log out of sessions, ensuring user data remains secure.
