OpenAI Forms Expert Group to Guide Nonprofit Goals
OpenAI is forming a group of experts to advise on its nonprofit goals as it transitions to a for-profit model, announced on their website. This group will provide insights into the most pressing challenges faced by nonprofits today, particularly in areas such as health, science, education, and public services within California.
The commission will gather feedback from leaders and communities and is expected to submit its findings to OpenAI's board of directors within 90 days. The board will use these insights to evolve OpenAI's nonprofit operations before the end of 2025.
OpenAI, originally founded as a nonprofit research lab in 2015, has since adopted a for-profit structure controlled by a nonprofit entity. This transition aims to balance the company's philanthropic mission with the need for capital investment, as it plans to convert its for-profit arm into a traditional corporation with ordinary shares.
