OpenAI to Acquire AI Coding Tool Windsurf for $3 Billion

OpenAI has agreed to purchase Windsurf, an AI-assisted coding tool, for approximately $3 billion, marking its largest acquisition to date.

OpenAI has agreed to acquire the AI-assisted coding tool, Windsurf Editor by Codeium, for about $3 billion. This acquisition, reported by Bloomberg, represents OpenAI's largest purchase to date. The deal is yet to be finalized.

Windsurf, previously known as Codeium, had been in discussions with investors, including General Catalyst and Kleiner Perkins, to secure funding at a $3 billion valuation. The company was valued at $1.25 billion last August after a $150 million funding round led by General Catalyst.

This acquisition is expected to enhance OpenAI's coding capabilities, complementing its existing offerings like ChatGPT. OpenAI has been actively expanding its AI product segments, having previously acquired search and database analytics startup Rockset to improve its enterprise infrastructure.
