Open Letter Urges US Schools to Disable YouTube and Gemini
In an announcement, thirteen organizations and experts led by DMV Unplugged called on US school districts to disable YouTube and Gemini by Google on school issued devices. The open letter was sent to the 150 largest districts, which serve more than 12 million students.
The signatories also asked districts to investigate student internet use more broadly. They said more than 1,000 school districts have sued YouTube over allegations that it harms and addicts students, while many still allow access on school devices.
The letter says Google enabled Gemini on many school issued devices without first seeking permission from schools or parents. It also cites a Common Sense Media assessment that rated Gemini for K to 12 students as high risk, citing inappropriate content, mental health risks and weak boundaries.
