NYC Comptroller Urges Anthropic to Pause IPO
New York City Comptroller Mark Levine urged Anthropic to pause its planned initial public offering until it addresses AI safety and governance concerns, in a letter dated October 14. Levine also asked the company to explain its planned audits and controls, their scope and implementation timeline.
The letter cites Anthropic's public warnings about advanced AI, including the risk that model capabilities could outpace human oversight. It also notes reports that the company's draft S-1 filing contains 80 pages of risk disclosures and that the IPO could value Anthropic at about $2 trillion.
Levine said preparing for the offering could divert resources from safety and governance work. The Comptroller's office advises and oversees New York City pension funds with more than $325 billion in assets, and he requested a written response from Anthropic.
