NTT DOCOMO and VIAVI Demonstrate AI-Driven 6G Network Control

NTT DOCOMO and VIAVI Solutions have demonstrated AI-driven radio access network (RAN) control for next-generation 6G communications, achieving up to a 20% throughput improvement through reduced control overhead, announced in a press release.

The study used VIAVI Solutions' digital twin and AI RAN Scenario Generator to simulate multiple base stations around Tokyo Station. Each base station selected optimal transmission beams based on predicted network quality rather than relying solely on user equipment reports. This approach reduced measurement overhead and freed up wireless resources for data transmission.

The test evaluated NTT DOCOMO's Self-awareness Network concept, which applies AI and digital twin technologies to assess network conditions and control radio environments in real time. The companies plan to continue research into 6G network technologies and related AI-based control systems.

The results will be presented at MWC Barcelona 2026, taking place from March 2–5 in Spain.
