National Grid and Emerald AI to Trial AI-Powered Grid Flexibility in the UK
National Grid and Emerald AI have announced a strategic partnership to showcase how AI data centres can enhance grid flexibility in the UK. Announced in a press release, the collaboration will feature a live trial in late 2025, utilizing Emerald AI's platform and NVIDIA GPUs to dynamically adjust energy consumption at a grid-connected data centre.
The trial aims to demonstrate how AI-powered systems can act as smart mediators between the grid and data centres, allowing for real-time energy use adjustments. This approach could unlock additional grid capacity and accelerate connections to the electricity network, supporting the UK's growing digital infrastructure needs.
The initiative will use the Emerald Conductor platform to manage energy demand flexibly, potentially reducing the need for additional infrastructure by ensuring data centres can lower energy use during peak demand periods. This partnership positions the UK as a leader in AI integration with energy systems, aiming to improve grid reliability and support the transition to a more efficient energy system.
