MPTF Coalition Seeks Platform Liability for AI Scams

Oct 2, 2026
More than 30 groups have formed United to Stop Online Scams, calling on Congress to make online platforms legally responsible for fraud prevention.

Motion Picture & Television Fund announced in a press release the launch of United to Stop Online Scams, a coalition of more than 30 consumer, older adult and technology accountability groups. The coalition is asking Congress to examine how online platforms profit from scams and make fraud prevention a legal obligation.

The launch included a national livestream and events in seven states. MPTF also released a public service announcement featuring scam survivor Kate Kleinert that shows how AI voice cloning and deepfake video can support fraud.

The Consumer Federation of America estimated that Americans lost $148.2 billion to online scams and crimes in 2025, equal to about $406 million per day. FBI data cited by the coalition showed that losses among Americans aged 60 and older rose 59 percent, with an average loss of $38,500 per complaint.
