Microsoft Integrates Anthropic AI into Office 365

September 10, 2025
Microsoft is incorporating Anthropic's AI technology into its Office 365 applications, diversifying its AI partnerships beyond OpenAI.

Microsoft Corporation is incorporating AI technology from Anthropic into its Office 365 applications. This move marks a shift from Microsoft's previous reliance on OpenAI for AI-driven features in its productivity suite.

The decision to integrate Anthropic's models comes after developers found that these models outperformed OpenAI's in specific tasks, such as handling complex financial functions in Excel and creating more visually appealing PowerPoint presentations. As a result, Microsoft plans to blend Anthropic's AI with OpenAI's technology across its Office tools.

Despite the integration of Anthropic's models, Microsoft will continue to use OpenAI's technology for some AI features in Office 365, known as Copilot. The pricing for Office AI tools will remain unchanged for customers.

Microsoft will access Anthropic's models through Amazon Web Services, even though AWS is a competitor in the cloud market. This strategic move is part of Microsoft's broader effort to diversify its AI partnerships and enhance the functionality of its Office AI suite.
