Meta Expands Louisiana Hyperion Data Center to $50 Billion AI Campus

Meta is expanding its Hyperion data center in Richland Parish, Louisiana, bringing its total investment to $50 billion and increasing the facility’s capacity to 5 gigawatts, reports NOLA.com. The project, first announced in 2024, will more than double the site’s footprint to over 3,200 acres, making it one of the largest data centers in the world.

Construction work will ramp up to employ about 7,500 people at its peak, while the number of permanent jobs is expected to reach 1,000 once both phases are fully operational by 2036. Meta said local businesses have already received more than $1.6 billion in contracts since construction began.

The company will allocate $1 billion for improvements to roads, water, and wastewater systems in Richland Parish. It is also funding new energy infrastructure through an agreement with Entergy Louisiana that includes natural gas plants, solar generation, and storage facilities. According to state officials, the deal could result in savings of roughly $2 billion for local customers over 20 years.

Meta is contributing $5 million to Louisiana Delta Community College to train residents for data center positions and $250,000 to the New Orleans Career Center. The expansion is supported by state and local tax exemptions, including a 60% property tax reduction if job creation targets are met.

Governor Jeff Landry said the cooperation between Louisiana, Meta, and Entergy will serve as a model for future industrial projects in the state.
