Ireland Investigates X's Use of EU Data for AI Training
Ireland's Data Protection Commission (DPC) has initiated an investigation into X, the social media platform owned by Elon Musk, over its use of personal data from European users to train its AI model, Grok. The investigation will focus on how X processes personal data from publicly accessible posts by EU users for AI training purposes, .
The DPC, which serves as the lead EU regulator for X due to its operations in Ireland, has the authority to impose fines of up to 4% of a company's global revenue under the EU's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). This inquiry follows a previous court case where X agreed to cease using EU user data for AI training after a legal challenge by the DPC.
The investigation will assess whether X has complied with GDPR requirements, including the lawful processing of data and adherence to transparency rules. The DPC has previously issued significant fines to other tech giants like Microsoft, TikTok, and Meta for similar violations.
