Hugo Larochelle Appointed Scientific Director of Mila
Hugo Larochelle has been appointed as the new Scientific Director of Mila, the Quebec Artificial Intelligence Institute, effective September 2, 2025. Larochelle, an Adjunct Professor at the Université de Montréal and former head of Google's AI research lab in Montreal, succeeds Laurent Charlin in this role. This appointment was announced in a press release by Mila.
Larochelle is recognized as a pioneer in deep learning and has significantly contributed to the field of artificial intelligence in Canada. His career includes co-founding the startup Whetlab, which was acquired by Twitter, and leading Google's AI research lab in Montreal. As Scientific Director, Larochelle will chair Mila's Scientific Council and guide the strategic direction of its research activities.
Mila, founded by Yoshua Bengio, is the world's largest academic research center for deep learning, with over 1,500 specialized researchers. The institute is based in Montreal and is partially funded by the Government of Canada through the Pan-Canadian AI Strategy.
