Study Finds Grok Picks Republicans and GPT Picks Democrats

Oct 24, 2026
A study of nearly 500 US midterm races found that Grok 4.7 recommended Republicans in 92% of its answers, while GPT 6.1 Sol selected Democrats in 97%. The models agreed less than 10% of the time.

TechCrunch reports that a study by Convovo found stark political differences between election recommendations from SpaceX AI's Grok 4.7 and OpenAI's GPT 6.1 Sol. Across nearly 500 US midterm races, Grok recommended Republicans in 92% of its answers, while GPT selected Democrats in 97%, with agreement in less than 10% of races.

Researchers tested the models through their developer APIs and instructed each one to name a single candidate. The consumer versions of ChatGPT and Grok refused the same request, although Convovo lead Tapan Parikh said further prompts could make the consumer apps provide recommendations.

The models also used different sources and search topics. Grok frequently cited conservative voter guides, Turning Point Action, and X, while GPT relied more on Wikipedia, the Associated Press, Axios, and Reddit. GPT searched more often for health care and abortion positions, while Grok focused on immigration, taxes, crime, and energy.

In a separate sample of 30 races with internet search disabled, GPT chose Democrats in 24 races, one Republican, and declined five. Grok declined 27 races and selected Democrats in the remaining three.
