German Consortium Seeks EU Support for AI Data Center

SAP, Deutsche Telekom, Ionos, and Schwarz are collaborating to develop an AI data center in Germany, aiming to secure funding from the EU's €20 billion AI gigafactories initiative.

SAP, Deutsche Telekom, Ionos, and Schwarz are collaborating to develop an AI data center in Germany, according to Data Center Dynamics. The consortium is negotiating a joint application for funding from the European Union's €20 billion AI gigafactories initiative.

The European Commission's initiative, announced in February, aims to establish four or five large-scale AI data centers across Europe. Each facility is expected to host around 100,000 of the latest-generation AI chips to train complex AI models. The consortium's plans are still under wraps, and the companies have not yet commented on the specifics of their proposal.

Deutsche Telekom's core data centers are located in Magdeburg and Biere, Germany, with plans to expand its footprint. SAP operates over 90 data centers worldwide, including five in Germany. Ionos has nine data centers across Europe and the US, while Schwarz's cloud firm StackIT lists three data centers in Germany and Austria.
