Elisa Estonia Deploys AI Battery Optimization to Support National Grid
Elisa Estonia has implemented Elisa Industriq's Gridle battery optimization solution across its mobile network to strengthen network reliability and support national grid balancing, announced in a press release. The system uses AI based management to control backup batteries at base stations, allowing them to participate in Estonia’s electricity balancing markets operated by Elering.
The deployment enables Elisa Estonia’s base station batteries to automatically charge or discharge based on grid signals, helping to stabilize electricity supply and demand. The batteries can now contribute to both upward and downward automatic frequency restoration reserves, while maintaining mobile service continuity during power disruptions.
According to the company, the Gridle solution reduces electricity costs through optimized energy use and allows new revenue from wholesale and balancing markets. The deployment follows Estonia’s synchronization with the Continental European electricity system in early 2025, which opened new opportunities for flexible electricity use.
Gridle was originally developed for Elisa’s Finnish network and is now available internationally for telecom operators and other energy users. It manages energy storage assets in sectors including telecommunications, commercial, and industrial operations, as well as residential battery systems.
