Creative groups launch charter for ethical generative AI use

Oct 15, 2026
International writing and creative industry groups have launched a charter that asks publishers, agents and other organizations to adopt transparent and responsible policies for generative AI.

Society of Authors and international creative industry groups announced in a press release a global charter for responsible and ethical generative AI use on October 14. Authors Kazuo Ishiguro, Tracy Chevalier and Kester Brewin have backed the initiative.

The charter asks publishers, agents, prize bodies and other signatories to assess proposed AI uses for risks involving intellectual property, data protection, creators, diversity and sustainability. It also calls for public policies on permitted AI use and disclosure, consent from rights holders and transparency when AI generated material forms a significant part of a published work.

The charter builds on UNESCO's 10 principles for responsible AI and the CLEAR framework for protecting creators' livelihoods. Society of Authors developed it with the Creators' Rights Alliance, Authors Guild, Australian Society of Authors, Writers' Union of Canada and New Zealand Society of Authors.
