Competition Commission of India Releases Study on AI and Competition

October 21, 2025
The Competition Commission of India has published a market study on artificial intelligence and competition, highlighting the rapid adoption of AI across sectors and the potential for anti-competitive risks. The report calls for responsible AI practices, self-audits, and stronger regulatory coordination.

The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has released a market study titled *Market Study on Artificial Intelligence and Competition*, conducted through the Management Development Institute Society (MDIS). The report examines the structure of India’s AI ecosystem, market trends, and potential competition issues arising from increased AI adoption.

According to the study, AI technologies are rapidly transforming market dynamics, business operations, and regulatory frameworks across multiple sectors in India. While the use of AI offers efficiency and innovation benefits, the report warns of emerging risks that could impact competition, including exclusive partnerships and dependencies that may limit market access.

To address these challenges, the CCI plans to organize a conference on AI and regulatory issues, conduct advocacy workshops on AI and competition compliance, and establish a think tank focused on digital markets. The commission also intends to strengthen its technical capabilities and engage with international competition authorities.

The report recommends that companies perform self-audits of AI systems for competition compliance and adopt transparency measures to reduce information asymmetry. It further calls for enhanced inter-regulatory coordination and improved access to AI infrastructure to foster fair competition and consumer protection in India’s growing AI sector.
