Colorado Senate Delays AI Regulation Implementation to 2026

The Colorado Senate has decided to delay the implementation of its AI regulation law until June 2026, following the collapse of negotiations aimed at amending the legislation.

The Colorado Senate has decided to delay the implementation of its artificial intelligence regulation law until June 30, 2026. This decision follows the collapse of negotiations aimed at amending the legislation, which was initially set to take effect in early 2024.

Senate Majority Leader Robert Rodriguez proposed the amendment to delay the law's start date after a tentative deal among consumer advocates, tech industry representatives, and other stakeholders fell apart. The negotiations, which took place during a special legislative session, were intended to address concerns about liability and the potential impact on innovation.

The original AI regulation law, passed in 2024, was designed to prevent discrimination in areas such as employment, healthcare, and housing by requiring disclosures about AI-driven decisions. However, the tech industry and other business groups expressed concerns that the law's liability provisions could stifle innovation and deter companies from operating in Colorado.

The delay will allow lawmakers more time to revisit the legislation during the regular session in January, with the hope of reaching a consensus that balances consumer protection with business interests.
