Coherence Neuro Raises $45 Million for Brain Cancer Implant

Oct 21, 2026
Coherence Neuro raised $45 million to develop a brain implant that detects electrical signals linked to tumors and delivers stimulation intended to halt their growth.

OpenAI's venture capital arm and Peter Thiel's Founders Fund are investing in a $45 million seed round for Coherence Neuro, according to Wired. The startup is developing a brain implant that uses AI models to detect electrical signals associated with tumors and delivers mild stimulation intended to halt their growth.

Coherence briefly tested the implant's recording ability in three people undergoing brain tumor removal surgery at Royal Melbourne Hospital in Australia. The device remained in place for about 30 minutes before removal. The company is now testing recording and stimulation functions in seven additional patients.

Coherence plans to use the funding for a clinical trial that will place the implant in patients with glioblastoma for longer periods. CEO Ben Woodington said OpenAI will not receive access to brain or health data generated by the company.
