Clivet Unveils Magnetic Bearing Compressor for AI Data Center Cooling
Clivet unveiled a magnetic bearing centrifugal compressor and liquid cooling system for AI data centers at the 2026 OCP Global Summit, the company said in a press release. The compressor uses two independently controlled shafts and can switch between single stage and two stage operation.
At high pressure ratios, both shafts run at different speeds. At low pressure ratios, the second stage shuts down and is bypassed. Clivet says this design can reduce compressor power by up to 40% at the same cooling capacity and increase maximum inlet flow by about 70% at low pressure ratios.
The system can move between free cooling and mechanical cooling without interrupting cooling, according to Clivet. Its bearings fit within recesses in the compressor housing, allowing the dual shaft design to retain the axial dimensions of a conventional single shaft unit.
Parent company Midea also appeared on the NVIDIA MGX participating company list at the summit. Clivet received the 2026 GW Scale Open AIDC Excellent Technical Presentation Award for its cooling architecture presentation.
