Bicycle Network Uses AI Cameras to Plan Cycling Event Rest Stops

Oct 18, 2026
Bicycle Network used object recognition cameras to measure rider traffic at three Peaks Challenge rest stops, identifying differences between expected and actual demand.

Bicycle Network used Artificial Intelligence Road Survey cameras to measure rider traffic at Peaks Challenge, as detailed on its website. The cameras recorded whether riders stopped or continued past rest sites at Tawonga Gap, Harrietville and Omeo during the event on March 8, 2026.

Only 10% of riders stopped at Tawonga Gap, compared with an expected 30% to 40%. Harrietville received 65% of riders and Omeo received 54%.

The system also measured demand by time. More than 1,130 riders entered Harrietville between 8:20 am and 9:20 am, giving organizers data to plan staffing, food and other resources around peak periods.
