ARUP Laboratories Expands AI Tool for Parasitology Screening
ARUP Laboratories has expanded its AI-augmented screening tool to include wet-mount slides, announced in a press release. This expansion makes ARUP the first laboratory to apply AI-augmented screening to the entire ova and parasite testing process.
The AI tool enhances the detection of human gastrointestinal parasites by minimizing human error and identifying ova and parasites that might otherwise be missed. This improvement in sensitivity and diagnostic yield is expected to enhance clinical diagnoses and treatment outcomes for affected patients.
The AI-augmented screening tool, developed in partnership with Techcyte, uses scanned images to screen and eliminate negative specimens, allowing laboratory staff to focus on identifying positive specimens. This approach reduces ergonomic stress, decreases turnaround time, and increases laboratory capacity, ultimately improving patient care.
Since its initial launch in 2019, the AI tool has shown a five-fold increase in detection limits and nearly doubled the positivity rate, setting a new standard for ova and parasite testing.
