Anthropic is reportedly nearing a deal to raise between $3 billion and $5 billion in a new funding round, which would value the AI startup at $170 billion. This round is being led by Iconiq Capital, with potential involvement from the Qatar Investment Authority and GIC, Singapore's sovereign wealth fund.

If finalized, this deal would nearly triple Anthropic's valuation from $61.5 billion, which was established after a $3.5 billion funding round earlier this year. The company, known for its focus on AI safety and research, continues to attract significant investment as it competes with other major AI developers.

Despite the rapid growth and increased valuation, Anthropic's CEO, Dario Amodei, has expressed concerns about accepting funds from sovereign wealth funds of authoritarian governments. However, the need for substantial capital to develop AI models has led the company to consider such investments.
