Elon Musk's xAI has laid off 500 data annotators as part of a strategic shift towards expanding its team of specialist AI tutors.

xAI has laid off at least 500 data annotators, marking a significant shift in its operational strategy. The company announced the layoffs via email, informing affected employees that their roles as generalist AI tutors were no longer needed. This decision is part of a broader strategy to prioritize and expand the team of specialist AI tutors by tenfold.

The layoffs impacted the company's largest unit, responsible for training the Grok AI by categorizing and contextualizing raw data. Employees were notified that they would be paid through the end of their contracts or until November 30, but their access to company systems was terminated immediately.

In a recent announcement, xAI stated its intention to hire more specialist AI tutors across various domains, including STEM, finance, and medicine. The company emphasized the value these specialists bring to its mission of developing truth-seeking artificial general intelligence (AGI).
