Wikimedia Deutschland Launches AI-Friendly Wikidata Embedding Project
Wikimedia Deutschland has launched the Wikidata Embedding Project, a new initiative aimed at making Wikipedia's extensive data more accessible to AI models. The project employs a vector-based semantic search system, which enhances the ability of AI to understand the meaning and relationships between words, as reported by The Verge.
This system, developed in collaboration with Jina AI and DataStax, transforms the existing data on Wikipedia and its sister platforms into a format that is more compatible with natural language queries from large language models (LLMs). The project also supports the Model Context Protocol (MCP), facilitating better communication between AI systems and data sources.
The database, which is publicly accessible on Toolforge, is designed to work seamlessly with retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) systems, allowing AI models to incorporate verified information from Wikipedia. This initiative aims to level the playing field for smaller AI developers by providing them with access to high-quality, curated data that was previously only available to larger tech companies.
The project underscores the potential for open, collaborative AI development, independent of major tech corporations, as emphasized by Wikidata AI project manager Philippe Saadé. A webinar for developers interested in utilizing this new database is scheduled for October 9th.
