OpenAI's Ambitious Plan for Weekly AI Infrastructure Expansion
OpenAI, in collaboration with Oracle and SoftBank, has announced the establishment of five new AI data center sites in the United States. This initiative is part of the Stargate Project, a $500 billion effort to build AI infrastructure across the country. The announcement was made on September 23, with the goal of producing a gigawatt of new AI infrastructure weekly, according to Business Insider.
The Stargate Project aims to reach a planned capacity of nearly 7 gigawatts (GW) with these new sites, in addition to ongoing projects with CoreWeave. OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, has outlined a vision to create a factory capable of producing a gigawatt of AI infrastructure every week, although he acknowledges the challenges involved in achieving this goal.
The new data centers are located in Shackelford County, Texas; Doña Ana County, New Mexico; and a site in the Midwest, which is yet to be announced. Additionally, two more sites in Lordstown, Ohio, and Milam County, Texas, are expected to scale to 1.5 GW of power over the next 18 months through a partnership with SoftBank.
In a recent development, OpenAI and NVIDIA have signed a letter of intent to deploy at least 10 gigawatts of NVIDIA systems for OpenAI's next-generation AI infrastructure. This agreement includes NVIDIA investing up to $100 billion in OpenAI, contingent upon the deployment of each gigawatt of systems.
