OpenAI Leads $15M Seed Round for Biosecurity Startup Red Queen Bio

November 14, 2025
OpenAI has led a $15 million seed funding round for Red Queen Bio, a startup spun out of Helix Nano that uses AI and lab research to prevent AI-enabled biological threats. The investment was approved by OpenAI's compliance team and unconflicted board members.

Reuters reports that OpenAI has led a $15 million seed investment in Red Queen Bio, a startup focused on preventing the misuse of artificial intelligence in developing biological weapons. The company combines AI models with laboratory research to identify and counter emerging biosecurity risks.

Red Queen Bio was spun out of Helix Nano, an mRNA therapeutics company that has collaborated with OpenAI on assessing AI-related biological risks. The startup’s co-founder Hannu Rajaniemi said the goal is to ensure AI defenses evolve as quickly as potential threats.

The funding round also included contributions from Cerberus Ventures, Fifty Years, and Halcyon Futures. OpenAI stated that its chief compliance officer and unconflicted board members approved the investment, with executives holding prior stakes in Helix Nano recused from the process.

This marks OpenAI’s second recent investment in the biosecurity sector, following its participation in a funding round for Valthos, a New York-based startup developing AI-driven biosecurity software.
