OpenAI Foundation Commits $250 Million to Study and Support AI's Economic Impact
OpenAI Foundation has committed $250 million to grants, partnerships, and direct initiatives focused on building secure and inclusive economic systems in response to artificial intelligence transformation, according to an announcement on its website.
The funding will support three main areas. The first is improving measurement and forecasting of AI's impact on the economy by building modern infrastructure for tracking employment, wages, and firm behavior. The second area focuses on supporting workers and communities affected by economic shifts through programs such as unemployment assistance, career transitions, and public sector capacity building. The third area aims to explore new models for economic security, including mechanisms like adaptive taxation, public wealth funds, and income distribution systems.
The Foundation plans to back research and pilot projects across different regions, particularly in low and middle income countries, to assess how AI can enhance local economies and public services. It will also invest in tools that make AI more accessible for people handling legal, financial, and health-related issues.
The organization expects to announce its initial funded initiatives later this year and will share findings as the work progresses.
